Mental Practice Resource
This resource was created by Drs Dan Eaves, Sarah Moore and Rachel C Stockley.
Thank you for visiting us. If you would like to access the mental practice resource, please scroll down to provide some simple information and you’ll receive an email with a link to all the material, free of charge.
Mental Practice is defined as: “A training method that involves repetitive cognitive rehearsal of physical movements in the absence of physical, voluntary attempts.” (National Clinical Guideline for Stroke in UK & Ireland). It is recommended by clinical guidelines as an adjunct to usual therapy for the upper limb after stroke as research shows it can have significant benefit to upper limb function (Stockley et al., 2021 – click here for the paper).
Here you can download a practical step-by-step resource that shows you how to develop your own mental practice scripts using the PETTLEP model of imagery. This is intended for use by healthcare professionals working in a clinical rehabilitation setting to create to promote upper-limb recovery in stroke survivors.
